Sonic Youth's fifth album, loosely inspired by the writings of Philip K. Dick. Recorded in a studio that used all tubes, the band was very happy with its sound.
The cover art on early pressings featured a Richard Avedon photograph ("Sandra Bennett, twelve year old, Rocky Ford, Colorado, August 23, 1980"), but this was removed following a threat of legal action from Avedon in early 1988. The offending image was initially stickered, and subsequently printed over with black ink (but still visible). On later copies it was replaced entirely by a black rectangle and/or obscured by a printed barcode.
The cover also features a photograph of Disney's Magic Kingdom, which was also obscured on some later versions. This image is commonly misunderstood to have been the cause of the potential lawsuit.
"Sister" is sometimes referred to as the band's fourth album, but the band itself considers the eponymous release to have been an album, making "Sister" number five.
New 2016 reissue vinyl includes double-sided insert and postcard with digital download code. Sticker on shrink-wrap says: Includes free download with bonus track "Master-Dik (Non-Beatbox Version)"
